Woodland Renovation

A Seamless Blend of heritage and contemporary craftsmanship. This project stands as a stunning example of old meeting new, where the character of a historic farmhouse is carefully preserved while contemporary design and modern performance are seamlessly introduced.

The original farmhouse had been derelict for many years, requiring extensive structural repairs to stabilise the building. During the early stages, it became clear that the property had also become both a hibernation and breeding site for bats. To ensure full ecological compliance, we worked closely with specialist ecologists, phasing each stage of construction to meet their brief and enabling the main works to progress within the approved seasonal window.

Inside the farmhouse, natural and breathable materials were prioritised. Wood fibre insulation and traditional lime render were applied to the solid walls, ensuring the building could effectively regulate humidity and manage moisture throughout the year. Subtle details such as the introduction of curved window reveals and the careful refurbishment of the original first-floor boards helped retain the farmhouse’s timeless character.

To meet modern living requirements, the ground floor was reconfigured into an open-plan kitchen, living, and dining area. Working collaboratively with Millard & Flo, we delivered their interior design and lighting schemes with precision, ensuring every detail aligned with their concept.

A contemporary steel-frame extension was added to complement the restored farmhouse. Environmentally conscious insulation systems and breather membranes ensure the extension remains warm in winter and cool in summer while maintaining full breathability. Externally the extension features European larch cladding, with secret fixings allowing this intricately planned façade to appear effortlessly simple and refined. Lime plaster was used internally to introduce natural texture and warmth.

Craftsmanship played a central role in the project, with our joinery team creating a bespoke oak-clad staircase complete with integrated LED lighting. Aside from the kitchen and utility, all joinery was produced on-site by our skilled team.

Sustainability was further enhanced through the installation and commissioning of an air source heat pump by our in-house plumbing engineers, ensuring the home benefits from efficient, low carbon heating.

The final touches included new timber sash windows for the farmhouse, preserving its traditional aesthetic, while the extension was fitted with contemporary aluminium units to complement its modern design.

This completed property is a celebration of sensitive restoration, precision engineering, and beautifully executed modern craftsmanship, brought together to create a home that will stand proudly for generations to come.
